Your first court date
A first court date, or “first appearance,” is a procedural step rather than a trial. It is held in a “case management court,” where the court monitors each case and sets further dates. You can generally appear in person or by Zoom, subject to any direction from a judge or justice of the peace. Video is the preferred format, but phone access is available; the joining details appear on your release papers.
Bail in Brampton
Peel Region bail hearings take place at this courthouse. The detained person typically appears by video from the police station or jail. Sureties, the people who promise the court to supervise an accused, may attend in person or by video unless the court directs otherwise. The court does not publish bail court video links on its public page; instead, the lawyer or duty counsel (free Legal Aid lawyers at the courthouse) shares them with sureties. Stephanie Heyens’ bail page explains the process in greater detail.

What to expect on the day
Once through security, find your courtroom on the court list or screens. Expect to wait, as courtrooms are busy. Keep your phone on silent and dress neatly. When your name is called, step forward to the front, or unmute if you are appearing on Zoom. If you do not have a lawyer, Legal Aid duty counsel may be able to help.
